I am absolutely loving Whoopies Pies and Macarons lately. What are these lovelies?
Macarons are a sweet-meringue base treat made with egg-whites, icing sugar & granulated sugar and almond powder. Adding some food colouring makes them oh-so-beautiful. The french macaron is commonly filled with buttercream or jam filling and sandwiched between two cookies, although more exotic flavours are making their rounds. Many folks mistakenly call them macaroons, which traditionally is a English treat, similar to an ameritti. (Enough of the history lesson!).
Whoopie Pies, according to folklore, got their name when Amish-American women would pack these treats into their husband & children’s lunch. When they opened their lunch-boxes, they would shout “Whoopie!!”. A sweet story but I’m not sure how true it is. Whoopie Pies are traditionally made with brown sugar & cocoa powder while the filling is made with marshmallow creme. Today.. these joyful pies are filled with just about anything your imagination can conjure up.
If you’re making your own favours for your wedding, wrap these up into clear bags and tied with pretty ribbon and add your thank you message. Or place them into beautiful mini boxes for your guests.
If you want to set up a dessert buffet table, all of these are great if you make them yourself or ask your cake baker/caterer to whip up a few batches in your choice of colours.
