To Take His Name or Not To Take His Name…

That, in today's world, seems to be the question which brides (and grooms) are googling more often. In South Africa a woman does not have to take the surname of her husband. She may keep her maiden or present surname or join her surname with that of her husbands as a double-barrelled surname. Whether the woman is to retain her surname or change it, the marriage officer needs to be notified prior to the wedding and signing of the marriage certificate. No application to the Department of Home Affairs is necessary in these instances, but to enable the Department of Home Affairs to update the Population Register, women should notify the Department of such changes in writing.
